This Audi A3 is a lovely premium hatch that deserves the plaudits. Certainly no, it’s not probably the most exciting thing in the universe, but it performs on nearly every level. Somewhat on the expensive side when compared with similar VW promotions though.
Comfort
Lovely insulation helps make the Audi A3 an excellent motorway cruiser, but there is not much room inside the back intended for passengers. Also steer clear of the optional S-Line suspension as well as large wheels if you value your spine – they re-define the definition of ‘hard’.
Performance
4 petrols and 3 diesels, including the new 1.4-litre TFSI turbo-and-supercharged unit. Very best compromises will be the Golf GTI-engined (197bhp) 2.-litre TFSI that strikes -62mph in only over 7 seconds or higher-powered diesel versions like the 2.-litre TDI with 168bhp. The 1.9-litre TDI can be cheap yet sluggish.
Cool
Too boring to be awesome.
Quality
Excellent – Audi knows how to make cars feel perfectly put together. Prod and push this cabin – you can’t be dissatisfied. Prod it again following 100,000 miles – ditto.
Practicality
If you would like a big boot then don’t forget this ‘Sportback’ version – sort of the hatch-and-a-half in dimensions, or a mini estate car. A gimmicky specialized niche? Maybe, however it sort of works. Normally this can be a practical hatch with a 350-litre boot – car seats collapse for 1,000 litres of space, stowage is good.
Running Prices
If you’re penny pinching yet want an Audi badge then you need the 1.9-litre diesel and more than 60mpg (allegedly) and 119g/km for inexpensive company vehicle tax. Residual values are pretty darn excellent. It’s that Audi logo.
